Have you ever sat and contemplated on who’s really in control of your life? In all honesty and truth, none of us is in 100% complete control of our lives. We all have to answer to some higher authority, or authorities. We don’t do whatever we please whenever we please however we please, and for those that do, they still do it under terms that are convenient for others, or they face consequences. We all know this. But I’m not exactly talking about that kind of control. I’m talking about the subliminal underlining control that most people don’t recognize as control.
The control I’m talking about, is society’s control over the individuals that exist within that society. This breaks down to countries, provinces, states, cities, communities, online, companies, and even our own small groups of friends that we exist under. The stakes are high, conform and obey this control, or be viewed as “anti-social” or an “outcast.”♥
How does one see if they are under control? Well I’ve noticed several aspects of life in which people are highly under control of society’s invisible hand. If you refuse to wear a certain brand name, not because you don’t like the styles they come out with, but because most people in your group don’t like it, you’re not in control. If you buy the latest pair of shoes as soon as they come out, whether or not you think they look nice, but because of the brand name, you’re not in control. If you insult a particular group of people, not because you have anything against them, but because the group around you has negative sentiments towards them, you’re not in control. If you dislike someone because of what others have said to you, you’re not in control. You’re feelings are chosen for you, not by you.
People often proclaim that they “take orders from no one,” when in reality they take orders from everyone. All knowledge is attained, all opinion is attained, all action is attained. The way people dress, the way people talk, the way they walk, how they carry themselves, is all a predisposition. Granted we all add a unique twist and a bit of individuality to it, but it’s still generated from a larger scheme of things. The only true individuals who may be viewed as in control of themselves, are the antisocial, who are still under some control.
I think if anything this train of thought refelects me growing up – and where people sought out being different wasn’t really different. They still walked that line to a paticular group. I’m glad I”m much older and don’t have to witness the lame attempts to be “different”. Worry about your ownself and seek out who you really want to be in this world.
