Black Like Me – John Howard Griffin

1.  John used the book title Black Like Me from a quote by Langston Huges. The quote is “Rest at pale evening…A tall slim tree…Night come tenderly, Black like me. The title describes the meaning of the book perfectly, in a way that serves a deeper meaning than what you see. Mr. Griffin makes his appearance black but acts the same way as he did as a white man. Only after spending time in the life of an African American does he understand what it means to be a different color treated in the Deep South and how we can relate to both sides of racism.

2. The theme of the book is autobiographical and it is a non-fiction book so the author is trying to tell his real-life story of a social issue that faced every American back in the 1950’s. He is trying to show how people are treated by just their skin color by experiencing the problem as a white man then a black man. The main issue is racism though John himself is not prejudiced against colored people, but instead what’s to understand what they are going through.

4. The cover of the book has a black silhouette of a man with white space in front of his face. There are words that look similar to the front of a typewriter. The title, Black Like Me, has the word ‘Black’ in black letters on the white side of the cover and the words ‘Like Me’ are on the silhouette in white letters. The same goes for the author’s name. It is an appropriate design because it shows the change in John when he goes from a white man to a black man. It almost foreshadows what will happen to John and that he will be publishing the journals that he writes about his journey.

6. One aspect that I loved about the novel is that it’s a true story. I love ready non-fiction books and especially when they are dealing with controversial issue such as racism. It also provides a real life perspective on the situation and it makes the novel more interesting to read.

7. I didn’t like how the novel was so short. The author put the book in a journal type format which made the pages shorter. I only disliked that because the book was an amazing read though was too short. It would have been excellent to keep writing about what happened in all the different states he visit.

8. My first quote from my book is on page 10, paragraph 6: “In the flood of light against the white tile, the face and shoulders of a stranger-a fierce, bald, very dark Negro-glared at me from the glass. He in no way resembled me.” I choose this because John realized how different he looked and his first reaction to himself as a Negro. He also had to mentally overcome the challenge in the coming weeks.

My second quote is on page 90, paragraph 2: “I told myself that I was tired, that I must not judge these men who picked me up and for the price of a ride submitted me to the swamps of their fantasy lives. They showed me something that all men have but seldom bring to the surface, since must men seek health.” At this time, John was picking up rides from white males off of the highway. They asked him various question regarding his sex life and asking stereotypical question about a Negro’s sexual activity. John had to realize that these men would never ask him such questions in the day, but only in the private time in those cars. John realized as well that every white man was different from the inside than what his actions showed on the outside.

Either answer the question in a comment or answer it in your journal and include the link in a comment. (To be considered “first to play,” a link must be to the specific entry in which you answered the question.) You may include this link in the URL space when leaving your comment, or in the comment itself. As long as it’s there in one spot or the other.

  1. Chocolate
  2. Coke/POP
  3. Junk Food
  4. Gossiping
  5. Shopping Online
  6. Spending too much time on my laptop
  7. Keeping a clean room!

Today I went to church. The Minister had a sermon series on “The Journey to the Cross”.  The journey towards Good Friday and Easter is known as the season Lent.  This is a time to reflect on our spiritual journey.  What things do we need to leave behind?  What things do we need to take on?  How can we grow as followers of Christ?  The first sermon is entitled “Beginning at the End”.

1. What’s your least favorite part of the morning?

Waking up to 104.5 Chum FM and listening to the news/music. After brushing my teeth and fixing myself for the day ahead. I always eat a small breakfast watching Breakfast Television on CITY-TV

2. Is there generally any day of the week that you usually sleep later than normal? If so, which day, and how often do you actually get to sleep in late?

It would have to be Tuesday because I know Wednesdays I’m home. And Friday I would sleep later than ‘normal’ because I’m out. I only get to bed really late if : i have work to do, or i’m out with friends or the bf, or if I feel like staying up watching a movie!

3. When the alarm clock first goes off, do you immediately get up, or do you take advantage of that snooze button?

SNOOZE! At least twice…so I get 20 more minutes of shut eye.

4. Do you sleep with the television on or off?

Oh goodness. OFF!

5. Take the quiz: What Part of the Morning Are You?

Hahaa I am – COFFEE – I only drink ICECOFFEE :

You Are Coffee

You are an energetic person. You find it easy to be alert and awake.
You are often the one who’s motivating everyone else around you. You have a lot of get up and go.

The mornings are your time to shine. It’s likely that you’re very productive in the morning.
You wake up with a purpose every morning. You can’t wait to get your day started.
6. What’s the part of your morning you least look forward to every day?

Probably finding what to wear.

Friday 5 for February 19: Rules

  1. Be honest: what are some rules you have for yourself that don’t really make much sense? Keep people at a certain distance… Never put my 2cents in unless I”m provoked…. Be nice
  2. What rules of questionable sense did your parents have for you when you were young? Rules of sense when I was young. I’m not sure. Probably good table etiquette.
  3. What’s a rule most people (if not all people) seem never to obey? Having compassion and understanding for others. I think a lot of people have become selfish and more into themselves. It’s quite sad.
  4. There are no rules governing the giving and receiving of Valentine’s Day gifts, but what rules should there be? I don’t understand the ‘hate’ and passion to knock it. I mean so what if you don’t have a significant other to celebrate it. It’s really about loving things around you and yourself. Plus its the most happiest time of the year for chocolate!
  5. If the Golden Rule says you should do unto others as you’d have others do unto you, what would the Silver and Bronze rules say? Silver – Do unto others as you’d have other do unto them and you. Bronze- You should do unto others as you’d have others do unto themselves?

  3. What is a current fashion tred you think look horrible? I think everyone has the right to their own fashion sense. I’m not a big fan of haram pants. That is all.
  4. What decade do you think had the best clothes? honestly! The 80s!!!! I love it!
  5. If you friends/family could throw away a single piece of your clothing, which do you think it would be and why? OMG it would be my red sweater/hoodie. I wear it all the time. It belonged to my brother. it’s like XXXXL it’s massively big lol but its sooooooo comfty!
